I would not fly on a 737 Max right now.  I don’t want to catch COVID-19 AND die in a crash at the same time.

That color is just there on the fuselage  barrels when they arrive for final assembly. It’s not an airline paint color.

You’d think they’d have learned not to make such statements public by now, at this point, 737 Max recertification is the aircraft equivalent of Willy Brandt Airport - a seemingly reasonable target date that keeps getting pushed back and back indefinitely until you can’t keep track of how many deadlines have been missed.

At this point, just keep quietly working on it, and make a surprise announcement after you’ve succeeded in doing it, no more dates in advance.

Hey Boeing...ever consider a re-brand? I want nothing to do with flying on one of these.

It’s pretty cool to see them transported though.

I don’t believe this was a statement; whether the leak was authorized or not, no idea.

Yep, they have it even when they first emerge from the river:

I’d fly on one but I’d want it no more than 1/3rd full.

Well they can hope, but I’d imagine airlines would probably prefer Boeing take their time right now, it’s not like they need those planes at the moment.

Yeah, I assume there are other PR aspects like trying to get federal aid, otherwise it definitely wouldn’t seem like the right time to rush anything.

Just a little joke.

The real story is they build them in Wichita and then ship them by rail to Seattle for final assembly. They made their 10000th delivery in 2018:

The three pictured above are a shipment that fell into a river after their train derailed.

I think they have started quietly removing the “Max” name from some marketing materials, in favor of just 737-7, 737-8, etc.

The only way I can confirm if 2020 hates me is if another 737 MAX crashes.

Sure it will hate the victims more, but I will still recognize the hate to me.

I wouldn’t be shocked. Ryanair did relabel at least one place to hide the MAX before they were all grounded:

Kinja'd!!!

I wouldn’t expect Boeing to ditch the 737 branding, but it would make a lot of sense to avoid MAX. Then again I thought Samsung would ditch the “Note” branding after that debacle, and I was clearly wrong.

Counter point: maybe they have already paid for the planes and due to increase capacity and increased efficiency they would be flying the MAX if allowed.

After surviving a harrowing upstream swim , these 737 fu se lages are returning to land in order to nest and lay their eggs.

Even if they have already paid, I think right now they’d prefer to just force concessions out of Boeing for the delay than actually take delivery of an aircraft people don’t trust.

So this will be the airplane from the meme I’ve seen:

That being said, I rode the train from NYC to Norfolk last December, and it was really rather pleasant. Paid for the more expensive seats, had power and shitty wifi, but I got lots of work done and was not stiff and sore when I arrived.

The difficulty is getting the foreign nations on board with this as many have just sworn off the plane or are not cooperating the way Boeing wants due to government pride/business ideals/Airbus lobbying efforts against, etc.

But at least they have plans that the carriers using the plane can work with to set up their own recurrent/differences training they will have to do.

I’m going to see that training this fall. So far that is the plan. If not, oh well, some other time. I’m not worried. I’m in a good place.

Amtrak is in the process of updating their regional trains as well. And of course Virginia has announced a massive plan to expand rail capacity and electrification, which will let Amtrak and VRE run more trains. This isn’t currently planed, but conceivably it could mean extending the Northeast Corridor Acela service down to Richmond (and you could imagine it going on beyond there to North Carolina). Amtrak also just started testing their second-gen Acela trains this year, with plans to launch service in 2021.

Yes, because 2020 is the PERFECT year to reinstate a plane with the most infamous fatal flaw since the De Havilland Comet. What could possibly go wrong

A330s had a similar issue. luckily 4 of the 5 times the crew were able to undo autopilot and control the aircraft. Also helped they were at cruising altitude and not vulnerable while climbing.

A max 8 is 2.13l/100km per seat., Max9 2.5.

The 757 is 3l/100km/seat.

Kinja'd!!!0

And I’d imagine most 757s are parked right now. A 737-900 is 2.66 (though numbers from the same source say 2.28 for the MAX 8 and MAX 9). So for that ~ 17% greater efficiency (at a time when fuel prices are very low) , do you really want to be paying for the aircraft (if you haven’t already paid the full purchase price), eating the additional storage/maintenance costs of additional planes, and dealing with the potential customer discomfort of flying on an “ unsafe” aircraft in an already unsafe situation? Or do you want Boeing to continue to delay delivery, and force them to make payments or other concessions for the late delivery? Seems like it should be the latter.

Boeing of course wants things out the door as soon as humanly possible, but it’s not at all clear to be it’s in the airlines interest. They probably won’t really need those planes until next summer.
